Serio Welcomes 2019
A Note from Sarah Serio:
It's the beginning of a brand new year and I'm thrilled to be moving forward with my art! Shows are being scheduled, entries being filled out, and exciting stuff to announce soon. I look forward to more of you seeing my work in person in 2019 as it makes it way across the country.
Now if you want to take a look at it now please check out my printmaking portfolio. I finally got it more organized over the winter break. There is still work to do but it's a good start! I've updated images from my body of work "Welcome to the Game: Human Trafficking in America" plus my other printmaking works. As always the work is for sale! Just send me a message to arrange that. (I think the most expensive piece is only $150....can't beat that!)
Also please remember to follow my work on Instagram (I post works in progress, shows, behind the scenes, and more!) and on Facebook! I appreciate every like and share.
Thank you for supporting my work in the past and continueing to do so in the new year! Hear's to a great 2019!

Serio Holds Exhibition at Cottey College
Sarah Serio is currently exhibiting a collection of her reduction prints at the Cottey College P.E.O. Foundation Art Gallery inside the Haidee and Allen Wild Center for the Arts. This solo exhibition speaks to the 27+ million people currently victims of human trafficking.
"I am attempting to create a linear story depicting the male victim, the female trafficker, the minor male and female victims, and the female victims," Serio said. "Each print tells its own unique story but also pushes and pulls the viewer into the piece next to it when exhibited together." "Welcome To The Game: Human Trafficking in America" runs through the end of the year in Nevada, Mo. |
Showing In Members Only Exhibition
Sarah Serio had her 10 color reduction block print "So The Devil Takes His Soul" selected for inclusion in the 2019 MidAmerica Print Council juried Members Exhibition.
"This piece takes a look a the hidden world of male youth victims of human trafficking," Serio said.
It's a common misconception that victims of trafficking are only female. Youth male victims often don't report abuse or have a difficult time finding resources to seek assistance.

Serio Shows Across America
Artist printmaker Sarah Serio has been busy recently boxing art and shipping it across America, because she has work in five different states and right here in Neosho.
“It was a unique situation getting accepted to so many juried exhibitions all about the same time,” Serio said. One piece in particular caught the attention of art jurors across the nation. “The Lines On His Face Tell the Story of His Pain” was accepted to 4 out of state shows and is showing in Neosho. It is on exhibit as part of the “4th Annual Hand Pulled Prints: The Current Practice in Printmaking” at Site: Brooklyn in Brooklyn, NY, the “Third Coast National Biennial” at K Space Contemporary in Corpus Christi, TX, “Stand Out Prints 2018” at Highpoint Center for Printmaking in Minneapolis, MN, “The Printed Image 7” at the Sabatini Gallery in Topeka, KS, the “23rd Annual Thomas Hart Benton Art Competition and Exhibition” at the Neosho Arts Council’s Big Spring Gallery in Neosho, MO and it just closed showing as part of “Rewriting the Master Narrative” at the Arts + Literature Laboratory in Madison, WI. This piece also just took Second Place in the Professional Division of the 23rd Annual Thomas Hart Benton Art Competition and Exhibition. “This is a piece that is just as poetic in person as its title,” commented Stephanie Fox Knappe, judge of the 23rd Annual Thomas Hart Benton Art Competition and Exhibition. “Ms. Serio has given us both an image and narrative that is incredibly rich and multi-layered. For me my mind is boggled when I think about the skill and careful calculations that are required to make a print at all, with everything in reverse, much less one that is 10 different colors,” added Knappe, who is the Samuel Sosland Curator of American Art at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. “This is a ten color, hand carved, reduction block print,” Serio explained. “I carve away the negative space for each layer of the print, one color at a time, printing from lightest to darkest. It’s print, carve, repeat for all ten layers. This piece took over a month to complete an edition of twenty-four originals.” In the field of artist printmaking each print is an original as it was done by hand at the same time as the others. This is how Serio is able to show the original is some many different galleries all at once. “When people hear print they often think of a print of a painting which today is a computer generated copy called a giclee. What I’m doing is physically creating each layer of each print one at a time in a group,” Serio explained. From a pool of almost 600 entries only 47 were chose by Suzanne Weaver, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the San Antonio Museum of Art, for the Third Coast National Biennial. Crawford Alexander Mann III, Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, was tasked with selecting only 75 works from over 900 entries for “Stand Out Prints 2018.” “This piece focuses the viewer on the face of a young man who is obviously in a situation of distress. That distress is being the victim of human trafficking,” Serio said. “Male victims are often overlooked and under-reported.” Serio commented that she hopes her work tells the stories of those suffering from this social injustice and helps bring awareness to the issue. “If we are educated about what’s really happening then we can take steps to stop it and make our communities safer for everyone.” |

It was also just selected for Lore Degenstein Gallery's Ninth Annual Figurative Drawing and Painting Competition and Exhibition at Susquehanna University. This print is an eight color reduction block print that is hand carved.
- Depicted in this image is a 14 years old girl, the average age of entry into human trafficking, and she is being sold into a world of violence, repeated rape, and forced drug use. Human trafficking does not discriminate, it just exploits. Today 27million people worldwide are sold into slavery. No age, gender, or race is excluded. As an artist my work strives to bring the harsh reality of this world to light so that I can help bring awareness to this social injustice.

Serio Takes Prize In New Jersey Exhibition
Sarah Serio's reduction print “Everything Is Never As It Seems” was just awarded Third Prize at the “4th Annual Juried Print Exhibition” at Artworks Trenton in Trenton, NJ.
This exhibition runs April 4 – 29 and was judged by Dave DiMarchi, a multi-disciplinary printmaker and artist working in letterpress, papermaking, silkscreen and sculptural book forms. As a multi-disciplinary artist, he has exhibited works on paper, installations and books in both the US and Europe.
In the already hidden world of human trafficking the male victim is especially unseen, as is the fact that the number of female traffickers is growing. In this hand carved and printed reduction block print we are given a glimpse into the world of a male victim and female trafficker. Our society doesn't expect women to be predatory. Women who turn to trafficking are often former victims themselves seeking to escape their own abuse.

Serio Showing In Three States
Sarah Serio is spreading awareness in three states with her works of art. Currently she has reduction block prints on display in three different shows in three states. Each piece deals with the subject of human trafficking and she hopes they will help bring awareness to this issue.
Her piece “One More Transaction Going Down” will be on display at the Art Gym gallery in Denver, CO from March 30 to April 22.
The exhibition, “impressed 2017: Destructive Beauty,” shines a spotlight on contemporary printmaking trends and printmakers from across the United States.
The exhibition features a diverse range and exceptional use of printmaking processes, according to the gallery. “The selected works maintain their beauty while exploring dark themes including: death and loss, human trafficking, pollution and natural resources, and cultural identity.”
“One More Transaction Going Down” is a direct representation of the epidemic of youth being sold into human trafficking. “What is really special about this piece is the fact that I was able to work with a model who is 14 years old, which is the average age for entry into human trafficking,” Serio said.
Serio also has a piece currently on display just outside Chicago, IL as part of the “30th Anniversary Women’s Works” exhibition running until April 30. Her piece “Reduced to Submission” was selected to join 120 other pieces all from female artists. Women’s Works is an international juried exhibition celebrating women artists. This year artists from as far away as Japan, Croatia, the Middle East and beyond are included in the show.
“It’s an honor to be selected for this show because women from around the world enter this show and I’m fortune to get to show alongside them,” Serio said. “This small 5 color reduction block print speaks to female victims of trafficking.”

Work Selected for Art Now: Printmaking
The Ann Arbor Art Center in Ann Arbor, MI is holding their annual media-focused exhibition “Art Now: Printmaking” and Sarah Serio was fortunate enough to her print "One More Transaction Going Down" juried into the exhibition. Serio’s piece was chosen for inclusion by juror Tyanna Buie who is currently an Assistant Professor and Section Chair of Printmaking at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI. Her portfolio of experiences includes national exhibitions, fellowships, and artist residencies. “One More Transaction Going Down” which will be on display through March 4 is a direct representation of the epidemic of youth being sold into human trafficking. “What is really special about this piece is the fact that I was able to work with a model who is 14 years old, which is the average age for entry into human trafficking,” Serio said. The process of creating these prints starts with a photoshoot to gather reference images that are then used to draw from and then create the designs that Serio carves into her blocks. "Whether the printmaking of the Reformation and Martin Luther or present-day printmaking of political election posters, prints and reproduction technology have been central to our social, political, educational and artistic development," Buie said. This year’s “Art Now: Printmaking” highlights artists from across the country who employ traditional printmaking processes as well as artists who use “print” as their foundation across disciplines, thus allowing for hybrid expressions of printmaking in sculpture, performance, video, drawing, and other artistic mediums. Serio’s selected work was created in the traditional printmaking technique known as a reduction block print. |
